Is that even possible? Can you really navigate life’s major transitions with flow and ease?
Not at first.
The paradox of flow and ease is that it takes work to get there. Like a ballerina who, after years of practice, makes her performance appear effortless.
Conscious change requires conscious work and major conscious change requires major conscious work. There’s no shortcuts or easy way out.
If you find yourself going through a major life transition – or about to enter one, here’re a few suggestions that might help you navigate it with greater flow and ease:
1. Embrace the Fear
Fear is nature’s way of letting you know that something in your environment has changed, is changing or about to change. By embracing the fear of losing something or someone you once held close to your heart, you increase your awareness of the changes taking place. And being aware of changes, as they happen, allows you to accept them with greater ease. As Byron Katie once said, “when I argue with reality, I lose.” Therefore, feel the fear and allow it to move through you.
2. Acknowledge the Transition
The word transition means to ‘go across’. This implies that you’re on a journey from where you’ve been to where you are going next. So claim it by naming it; own it by choosing it. What would you love to create next in your life? Who would you love to be in this next stage? What are you transitioning into? What if you could give your transition a theme or maybe even a theme song?
3. Notice the New
In nature, transitions happen gradually, easily and effortlessly. Like turning pages on a book, the next stage of your life is already at your fingertips. The new is already starting to show up. Maybe you haven’t been looking for the signs, yet. So, notice what word, idea, person, place, or thing keeps showing up in your life. Anyone of them could be the door that takes you across and onto the other side.
4. See it as an Intense Period of Growth
As seedlings grow into trees, so are you being asked to grow. Learn to see this transition as a period of intense expansion and growth. A period where you’re releasing everything that no longer flows, fits, or feels right; and you’re getting to know yourself all over again. It is homecoming time, baby! What are the qualities you want to fully embody in this next stage?
5. Be Kind to Yourself
Above all, be loving, gentle, forgiving and kind to yourself. Let yourself off the hook by letting go of the need to have all the answers, get it right, or make it across successfully. Remember that you’re on a journey, one that will appear confusing, scary and challenging at times. So get lots of rest, move your body, read a good book, eat foods that nurture you, and spend quality time with loving and supportive friends. 6. Remain in your Heart
Inspiration, wisdom, and guidance flow through your feelings. Therefore, stay in your heart and listen. Pay special attention to that aspect of yourself that sees the bigger picture of your life; that knows this transition was imminent and designed by your own soul so that you could grow into a higher version of yourself. Feel the flow and ease that is available to you right this moment and each time you breathe deeply into your heart. Here’s a wonderful prayer that will help you with that.
7. Take Action When it Feels Right
Just like in your previous transitions, the time will come when you will know exactly what to do, where to go, who to speak to, and what to say. There’s an intelligence to life some people call God, that knows the depth of your heart and will either nudge you or kick your ass into action when the right time comes. So be sure to act. And when you do, don’t just act. Act decisively!
